2 Days Aberdare Lodge Safari:
The Aberdare National Park was created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. While the park has elephant, lion, rhino, black leopard and the beautiful but elusive bongo antelope, it is rarely visited by safari companies and individual travellers. There are a number of reasons for this, one is that the high rainfall turns the roads to mudslides and you need a 4×4 to get anywhere, and as a result the park often closes in the wet season. Added to this is the dense forest, which makes game viewing tricky.
Day 1: Nairobi to Aberdare National Park, Kenya
Depart Nairobi at 0830hrs. Cross the Kenyan Highlands, through pineapple and coffee plantations, to your “base hotel” in time for lunch at Aberdare Country Club. Afternoon transfer into Aberdare National Park and on to The Ark Lodge for bird watching and overnight floodlit game viewing from the lodge viewing decks. Ark Lodge, set in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, is an unique tree lodge with a veranda that overlooks a floodlit waterhole and saltlick allowing undisturbed views of wildlife visiting the waterhole. Elephant, rhino, leopard, bushbuck and occasionally an elusive bongo and giant forest hog have been sighted.
Resembling and named after Noah’s Ark, The Ark Tree Lodge is designed with ‘decks’ from which numerous balconies and lounges provide superb vantage points for game viewing. A ground level bunker provides excellent photographic opportunities and takes you closer than you would believe possible to the wildlife. Dinner and overnight at The Ark Lodge or Treetops Lodge or similar.
